Course Description

Human beings are social creatures. This simple fact would be obvious to an alien anthropologist visiting earth after perhaps the first half hour on the planet. And yet, the details of the ways that our species has been shaped from its earliest origins both by and for social interaction may take even the most astute alien observer some years to puzzle out. Our bodies, brains, and behaviors have been inexorably shaped by reliance on others. Our ear canals selectively amplify frequencies characteristic of the human voice; our infants prefer human faces to other visual stimuli within the first hours of life; our technology depends entirely on the effects of culture accumulating over generations. This interdisciplinary talk will draw on neuroscience, anthropology, psychology, and primatology to explore the profound impact that community and sociality have on human life.
