Course Description

This class is intended to provide a book-end to last year’s class on Pearl Harbor. (There will be a short review in the first class of how things started.) It will be co-taught by Dan Whitney and Renee Loeffler. Topics include: mobilization of science in the war effort; development of and decision to use the atomic bomb; the Yalta and Potsdam conferences; origins of the Cold War; and long-term consequences including developments in post-war Japan, the beginning of the “nuclear age” and ongoing debates about the morality of using the bomb.
