OLLI 1004 - Color Perception: From Biology to Culture
Course Description
Color is not an objective property of the universe; it is an artifact of the behavior of various cells in eyeballs of creatures that possess nervous systems. Every species sees differently: dogs only have two types of cone cells in their eyes whereas honeybees have four. Even members of the same species see differently; there is remarkable diversity in human color vision. Human languages encode color differently and this encoding loops back to affect our perception. This class will discuss the philosophy, biology, and culture of color perception within and across species.
This course meets online over Zoom. Class recordings will be available.
